Varekamp Coldstores is the storage and handling service within the Van Rijn Group and has been situated on the premises ABC Westland in Poeldijk since 2001. "We are a turntable in the chain," says René Tunker, warehouse manager at Varekamp Coldstores. Varekamp Coldstores offers a full service concept for national and international customers. "Customers like being taken care of. The customers of Varekamp Coldstores will be be occupied with the trade and not all the additional facets. With our team we offer quality solutions and we're careful with our customers' 'capital'."
Many of the products that are stored and cooled at Varekamp Coldstores go to supermarkets. Among others, they demand small packages. Sister company Pakstation Joossen for instance, cooperates in this. This is logistically seen a perfect combination, seeing as Pakstation Joossen is located right next to Varekamp Coldstores. "Due to the shorts lines there is an efficient and good collaboration." This means the pallets are manipulated less and there are optimal product conditions during the length of the chain.
For international customers the focus is mainly on the storage and handling of vegetables and exotic fruit, especially as Varekamp Coldstores also has customs facilities. The origin of products is extremely diverse. For instance, grapes come from South-Africa, Chile, Brazil and Argentina so we can store grapes almost all year round. It's nice to note that the storage of grapes from Westland was once the start of Varekamp Coldstores. Besides that, at the moment garlic, ginger, grapefruit, avocados, mangos and pineapple are being stored. Varekamp Coldstores also has patronage in the area of bulbs such as lily and amaryllis bulbs.
Of course every product requires a specific temperature, but air humidity is also important. During the past years these have been aspects in which Varekamp Coldstores has continued to develop their expertise. The air humidity is tracked and adjusted day and night.
The demands of the customers have changed in the course of the years. The customers know what they want and what's going on. "The demand for longer durabilty by using the right storing conditions is definitely an item. Varekamp Coldstores responds to this, and it's working," says René. Around 55% of the turnover is international. These customers from a far expect Varekamp Coldstores to be pro active, that we think with them. This happens of course and the customer is updated every 24 hours. The information supply of all movement around the product is optimal and computer guided. With reports, continuously up-to-date due to RF-scanning the bar codes, the customer is always aware of what's happening to their product. Varekamp Coldstores made the link between unique pallet numbers, making them 100% traceable. Transparency and discretion are key to this. "Thinking together is extremely nice. We don't see the customer as a customer but as a partner." In short, Varekamp Coldstores distinguishes itself by it's pro active attitude and develops itself continuously to the wishes and needs of its customers and partners.
"Varekamp Coldstores has a reasonable amount of organic customers. There are different rules in the organic trade, so the products are stored separately and don't mix. Usually the outgoing volumes are smaller than in conventional trading. The manner of approach is no different. The organic market is developing in the area of sustainability, organic produce is can be kept longer and longer. Abroad the organic trade is starting to kick off, everything is grown to European standards and there are tight checks on crop protection for food safety."
Ginger, among others, is stored in special cells. This is often delivered wet and using modern technology it can be dried and stored for longer. After 4 to 6 weeks these products are still in fine condition. By using the right combination of temperature and air humidity the products remain good for longer.
Varekamp Coldstores is active in sustainable and responsible business. An example of this is the floor heating in a large part of the cooling cells. This floor is heated by residual heat from the cooling installation. "Due to this special floor heating the air humidity can be controlled up to 1% accurately. This means the quality control is also optimally developed. It's a unique concept and twofold. Firstly, it's responsible and sustainable, seeing as it's reusing residual heat and completely controls the use of energy. Secondly it is distinctive ability of Varekamp Coldstores.
Varekamp Coldstores will be at Fruit Logistica in Hall 3.2 Stand B- 05 as a part of the Van Rijn Group. The contact person for Varekamp Coldstores is Willem Nowee, commercial director.
