Varekamp Coldstores starts with a unique citrus fruit sorting line for organic products

Varekamp Coldstores has, as of the beginning of July, started using a unique sorting line for organic Citrus fruits. This automated line sorts and washes the organic fruits, such as oranges, mandarins, mineola's, lemons and grapefruit. The fruits are then cleaned and dried. This line is an efficient alternative when dealing with quality issues, as the amount of labour per unit will be significantly lowered. What actually makes this line unique is the fact that it will be used exclusively for certified organic products.

Over the years, Varekamp Coldstores has sorted (organic) fruits for its clients. However this was usually done manually by the employees. Since this is a constant re-occurring issue when dealing with organic products, Varekamp Coldstores has opted to invest in this specially designed sorting line. Varekamp Coldstores, which is a logistic service provider for several clients in the organic market, not only in the Netherlands but also abroad, believes that the organic market is a valuable market segment. With this innovation, Varekamp Coldstores seals its position as an outstanding service provider, by offering a dedicated quality, and higher level of care. Consequently, this latest development has enabled Varekamp Coldstores to give its clients the opportunity to optimize their services as well.

The process basically, involves quality affected Citrus fruits to be first sorted out then washed with high pressured nozzles in combination with brushes. As an extra precaution, the fruits are scanned for melting rot with the help of UV light, thus insuring that issues not visible to the naked eye are also caught. Following that, the citrus fruits are dried and repacked into the desired packaging. This sorting line also offers the ability to place the citrus fruit in so called bins, thus allowing the end user to (re)pack it into smaller packages afterwards. This specific sorting line is built in two separate rooms to maximize the prevention of contamination.

  • Important benefits for the client are:
  • Improved quality assurance;
  • Automated processing, savings on labour and expedited process;
  • Extended shelf life and reduced losses at the subsequent chain;
  • Decrease in complaints and / or claims;
  • Flexible packaging, possibility for several options;
  • In sum, this sorting line is a great improvement of the integral value chain. It's a benefit and added value to suppliers, exporters, importers and for retail organizations.

This sorting line has already been in production for a couple weeks, and thus far the feedback from several clients has been very positive. With this additional service, Varekamp Coldstores has successfully transitioned into an integral logistic service provider towards clients in the Netherlands, and also abroad.
